Groom's cakes are often whimsical and sometimes feature a hobby, sports activity, or other interest of the groom. Traditionally, groom's cakes are made of chocolate, but of course, they can be of any flavor.
Bone fishing was the theme for this groom's cake. I painted scenes of water and foliage as well as varieties of bone fish directly on the fondant icing on the top and sides.
This groom's cake was created for a triathlete. The scenes on the pastillage plaques on the top were of the groom cycling, running, and swimming. The plaques on the side showed pictures of the groom participating in his other favorite sports: diving, golfing, and skiing. Interspersed between the plaques were round pastillage shapes painted to look like bicycle wheels.
This unusual groom's cake was designed for an art collector. I painted a Cézanne painting directly on the fondant icing. Since all my paintings are done with food color, everything - as always - was entirely edible.
